Hmm ... fandom is not exactly part of my nature, but there is one thing that I will never understand: being fan of a politician!

You may remember the late Jörg Haider, a nationalist, populist politician who recently used his car and a lot of alcohol to make an end to career and life. Well, he was the governor of Carinthia and immensly popular there. He happened to die colliding with a concrete fence post in front of the house of one of his fans, someone who had painted his house in orange, the color of Haider's party. For weeks there where thousands of candles burning at the site of the accident, and even now, almost two months later, you find some hundred of them.

Somehow that always amazes me. Why do people idolize politicians? They don't seem to identify with them, they look up to them.

It's interesting and scary at the same time. Jörg Haider has achieved nothing of any importance, was responsible for enormous amounts of public money wasted on stupid projects to aggrandize himself - and people love him! If there is any overarching line in his politics, then it is the instrumentalisation of xenophobia - but people love him! He was a rich man, portraying himself in an absurd way as kind of Robin Hood, defender of the poor, but he only managed to increase public debts - and still they love him!

Any idea why? Why do people become fans of politicians?
